Welcome to Year Five
Our two classes are;
- Badgers class with our teacher Mr Belton and our teaching assistants Mrs Wilde and Mrs Gaydon
- Foxes class with our teacher Miss Oliver and our teaching assistant Mrs McPhee
In Year 5 we combine hard work with a variety of fun activities to enhance our school experience.
In the Autumn Term...
We start the year looking at the Ancient Greeks. In English we look at Greek myths and learn all about the different mythical creatures. We then use our learning to write our very own myth. For our art work, we study Greek pottery before making our own pot. This is a tricky task as we have to learn how to work effectively with clay but the end product is very rewarding. After half term, we thoroughly enjoy all aspects of our Greek day. We come to school in Greek clothing and taste food that the Ancient Greeks ate. We then make shields to help us in our warrior training. Finally, we hold our very own Greek Olympics. We design our own Olympic events and then have the children in the other class compete in them. In computing we have the opportunity to very creative as we design our own computer games. This is a very fun task and allows us to see how computer games have changed in such a short space of time. In RE, we have the pleasure of putting on an assembly for the school all about Harvest. This allows us to understand this time of year in detail and celebrate it fully.
In the Spring Term…
A River Runs Through It
This term we will explore rivers as part of our Geography learning. We learn all about the journey of a river and how a tiny drop transforms into part of a larger body of water. To help us understand this journey, we will look at the water cycle in our science sessions. To further investigate rivers, we will explore a range of texts in our writing and reading sessions. We start with ‘Queen of the Falls’ to help us write a persuasive text and newspaper article. We will then move onto ‘The River Singers’ to help us write a mystery story. After half term, we will embark on one of the highlights of year five; our residential trip to Lodge Hill. Here we will continue our river learning by walking along the river Arun. We will use this opportunity to extend our map reading skills and identify habitats and living things. Our trip away will include adventurous activities such as wall climbing, tunneling and archery. In RE, we will continue to explore the Gospels as well as looking at the salvation as we approach Easter.
In the Summer Term...
As we come to the end of Year 5, we have lots to keep us busy. We explore both near and far with our science topic of Earth, Space and Planets and a local study of Haywards Heath. A trip to Chichester Cathedral allows us to compare this place of Christian worship with our local church – St Wilfrid’s. During the summer term we really work on our athletic skills, trying out lots of different events like you see in the Olympics.
