Welcome to Year 3!

Our Autumn Project Map - 2025
Our Spring Project Map - 2026
Our Summer Project Map - 2026

We are writing to share some information about life in year 3.

Our two classes are Hares class with Mrs Burnham and Miss Hedgecock and Rabbits class with Mrs Newman. Our teaching assistants are Mrs Rogers, Mrs Somerville and Mrs Page.

Curriculum

We have launched our term’s learning with the project question ‘What does it mean to be human?’ Across our Writing and Reading lessons we will use a range of texts including ‘UG’,Stone Age! Bone Age!’, ‘Stone Age Boy’ and a selection of non-fiction books. Our history focus will be the Stone Age and then into the Iron Age. In science, we will be learning about the human body, including the skeleton and how it moves. Also discovering more about nutrition and diet. Later on in the term we will be making observations and comparisons between different kinds of rocks. For our DT project, we be developing our understanding of mechanisms and experimenting with materials. In RE, we will answer two questions ‘What are important times and places for Jews’ and ‘Why is light an important sign at Christmas?’ An overview of the curriculum can be found on our school website which can be found at www.stwilfrids-hh.school/web.

Reading at Home

Even when your child enjoys reading and reads well on their own, they still need opportunities to read aloud books to an adult regularly. As well as reading their ‘Year 3 Reading Challenge book’ they will have a choice of books to borrow from their classrooms and the school library. Every time your child reads at home, you (or your child) should fill in the page numbers/chapters read in their home school reading record. When children have finished a chapter book, they need to record the title of the book at the back of their reading record so we have can see the types of book that they are reading.

Celebrating Reading

The children will again be working towards earning certificates for the amount of reading they have done (recorded in their reading record book) 20, 50, 100, 150 times and beyond and these will be awarded to the children in celebration worship on a Friday

Homework

Homework will be set weekly from Friday 26th September. Maths and Spellings homework is set on a Friday and needs to be submitted by the following Wednesday. Maths homework will be an activity on the website MyMaths and spellings will be set on Spelling Shed. Children will be been given their log-in details for both websites before their first homework is scheduled. Remember to let class teachers know if these get misplaced.

Spelling words will be a mixture of words from the statutory ‘word lists’ and those with particular spelling patterns and will be tested in school during the following week. Times tables and related division facts should be practised on an on-going basis, ideally a three minutes dailyChildren are expected to know these and be making progress with them. ‘Times Tables Rockstars’ is an excellent website to use to practise these. All children are expected to complete and submit their homework on time.

PE

PE will take place on a Monday (outside) and a Thursday (inside). On these days, children should attend school in their PE kit. We recommend wearing warmer clothes during the colder weather including pair of jogging bottoms, school sweatshirt and have a rain-coat available. PE is only cancelled in the event of heavy rain, icy or extremely cold conditions. If there is any reason why your child cannot participate in a PE session, please let the class teacher know via the year group email address. Children with pierced ears must be able to remove their own earrings or cover these with tape brought from home.

Water bottles and snacks

Please remember to bring in a water bottle and a healthy fruit or savoury snack (for example, fresh fruit, a bagel, raisins) for break time. Please ensure any snacks are nut free.

Uniform

Please ensure your child has a waterproof coat in school every day. Children will only stay indoors at playtimes if it is raining heavily. All clothing, including PE kit, should be labelled with your child’s surname

We are looking forward to a great Autumn termIf at any point you have a message for your child’s teacher, please contact us through the year group email: year3@stwilfrids-hh.school

Please do contact us if you have any questions.

Best Wishes
